Anita joined The Friends as executive director on December 3, 2007 and has been a board member for more than eight years. She has proven experience in strategic planning and organizational design that will serve The Friends well as the 27 Friends’ organizations and the foundation align to help support the Hennepin County libraries. As President of the Minneapolis Public Library, she was instrumental in helping consolidate the two library systems in Hennepin County. Anita was a member of the New Central Capital Campaign committee and Chaired the Corporate Giving committee that raised more than $16.5 million for the Minneapolis Central Library. She has more than 30 years of corporate and business experience and for the past nine years, as President of Duckor & Associates has helped profit, nonprofit and government organizations move toward their next level of performance.

Douglas began volunteering with The Friends in 2003. In 2007, he joined the staff as Assistant Bookstore Manager. Douglas works with volunteers at the Central Library Bookstore and assists with special projects, including coordination of the Local Publisher Program. He is currently an editor at Free Spirit Publishing and a volunteer literacy tutor at the Franklin Learning Center.

Dawn joined The Friends in 2002 as Campaign Coordinator for the Central Library’s $15 million capital campaign. She went on to coordinate the pre-opening and grand opening events when the Central Library opened to the public in May 2006. Her current responsibilities include planning and implementing all elements of The Friends Development program including the Minerva Circle, corporate and foundation grants, sponsorship, and annual fundraising events.

Rachel has been with The Friends since 2001, starting as the Program and Membership Director and evolving into her current position as Communications, Marketing, Membership Director. She develops and coordinates The Friends public programs -- such as The People’s University, Talk of the Stacks, Holiday Toast, and Film Chronicles. Supporting development and advocacy efforts, she oversees all of The Friends communications materials including the website, newsletters, fundraising materials, advocacy publications, and merchandise design.  She also manages the membership program at The Friends.

Caroline joined the Friends staff as an Administrative Assistant in 2007. Her responsibilities include data entry, preparing mailings, and helping around the office. She works primarily with the Development team and Office Manager.

John McCarten

John McCarten is the Manager for the Friends of the MPL Gift Shop & Book Stores. He has been with the Friends for 14 years, first as a volunteer for the Book Store, then as Assistant Manager, and now as the full time manager (since 2000). John works with a dedicated group of volunteers to offer the public discarded library books as well as snazzy MPL logo merchandise through the Book Stores.

Linda Merritt

Linda joined The Friends as Office Manager in 2005. She is responsible for the financial administration and fiscal reporting of the Friends programs and operations. Other fun activities include gift/fund/endowment tracking, administrating employee benefits, and inventory control. Linda keeps The Friends in compliance with state and federal filings, as well as assists in the annual budgeting and audit processes.

Adam joined the Friends staff in June 2006 as Program Assistant for public events and Research Assistant in support of library advocacy and the Library Advisory Committee, a board charged with exploring long-term funding solutions for the Minneapolis Public Library. As Research and Advocacy Coordinator, Adam's responsibilities now include ongoing research in support of public libraries and the library consolidation, serving as a liaison to community organizations, and coordinating advocacy efforts toward The Friends goal of increased public funding for libraries. He continues to assist with public events.
